It's okay to be vulnerable

One of the most fear-inducing situations to be in is one of vulnerability. We go to extreme lengths to avoid it at all costs. We’re willing to lie to ourselves about what we want, who we really are, what our true intentions are. We close our eyes, shift truths, sabotage ourselves, reinforce defenses.

To be vulnerable is first and foremost to be honest with ourselves. It’s to voluntarily disarm our own defenses and shine light to those festering things we’d rather leave unclaimed in the dark. It’s to fully own up to our shame, our hopes, our insecurities, our fears.

Then to act upon this vulnerability is to expose the very stuff we are made of. Bare our bones, face judgment and rejection. Understand the risks, fight for what we want. Surrender control and hope. Open ourselves up to the possibility that what will happen next will break and remake who we are. To embrace vulnerability is to be made aware of our own fragility and powerlessness. It comes with internal struggle and emotional turmoil - and that is fucking terrifying.

It’s understandable why we would be afraid, why the mere thought makes us want to instead strengthen our defenses. We walk around with built-in security systems designed to find anything that may threaten exposure, to protect us from those who may be getting too close. We focus our energy constructing an attractive, protective, perfect vision of who we are. It’s almost too easy to be someone we’re not, to fall into a routine of distracting ourselves from ourselves. We drink, party, fuck, shop, fall fast and hard into romances that have no substance. Do things for the momentary thrill of escape, for those few moments we can forget ourselves.

The consequence of exchanging vulnerability for an illusory perception of who we are is that we become a hazard to ourselves. It’s an act of betrayal when we shut out parts of ourselves, especially the parts that we are afraid of. We leave the scary bits to fester, grow, and become something unrecognizable within us while indulging in a false sense of security.

One of my favorite songs has the lyrics, “But a prayer without belief is like a pill without relief so I'll just save us both the letting down.”  Being vulnerable means opening yourself up to others, being able to ask for help, being honest with those around you. Being able to let others into your life instead of hiding behind walls and trying to never let anyone down with who you really are. Being vulnerable takes courage, and nothing about this is easy. But the things that make us feel vulnerable and scared are often the things that define who we are.

And to turn our backs on that is to exist in an anesthetized and stagnant state of being.

This past year has been marked by vulnerability. At times, it left me scared, defenseless, exhausted, exposed, defeated, raw, and unnerved. I look back and realize I had a choice every step of the way. I could either take a long, hard look at myself and own and expose my demons within or I could continue to withdraw and protect myself.

And I have finally chosen vulnerability.

We can all pretend, but the parts we’ve locked and vaulted away will still be there waiting for us. So be vulnerable, it will be alright. There’s no regret in being true to who we are, fighting for what is really important to us and evolving into who we were truly meant to be.

ARTC 1353: Website design

One of the great aspects of using Illustrator is having the ability to create a website and generate the html required, something that is great for someone like me that has zero experience in coding. While I know I would eventually like to learn how to code, I'm not there yet and I think it will be a long time before I have the knowledge to code a website. But, what I can do is create a website that I design and have Adobe generate the html. I'm sure all of you out there that actually know how to code are thinking that is lazy or whatever, but it is a lot more than I knew how to when the semester started!

Using a couple pictures from the last American Aquarium show I went to (I figure I may as well use them for something since I had over 700 pictures from the weekend), I created a very basic website. I could probably spend a lot more time actually working on the pictures and switching between Photoshop and Illustrator to make it look better, but I've been working on it for a little over two hours and I'm tired of working on it.

ARTC 1353: Concert Poster

In my computer illustration class, we were tasked with creating a movie or concert poster using the skills we've learned thus far. I had a lot of fun creating and working with this assignment. In some ways, I can't believe that there are only two classes left in the semester, it feels like this semester just started. I think, out of all of the assignments we've had so far, creating this poster has been by far my favorite assignment (and how strange is that, I actually have enjoyed the homework assignments I've had to do?!).

ARTS 1311 - Shape

This week's assignment seemed to be much easier for me. Whatever confusion I had of last week's has passed and I was able to simply read the assignments and get them done. And I actually was able to get them done earlier than I had expected to! Always a plus. This week we focused on shape and how it creates the image. The first two examples were fairly basic, create a solid shape with no internal details and create an image that uses negative space to enhance it. The third one was probably my favorite, we were to create an image using text. I chose to use an image I had of a BJ from American Aquarium, and create a guitar with the lyrics to "Burn. Flicker. Die."

Lucero - Goodbye Again

I know its been quite a while since my last "Music Monday" type post, so here's another song that is sure to be a nothing less than a way to make it through your Monday. Like most of the people that work Monday - Friday, I'm not a fan of Mondays. Since this is a short week and I'm really looking forward to the weeknd, I needed something to help me through today. So I've fallen back on one of my favorite bands, Lucero. With a mix of Lucero, Ryan Adams, Wilco, and American Aquarium, I think I might make it through this short week.

American Aquarium - Burn. Flicker. Die

I think I speak for all American Aquarium fans when I say this: It's about fucking time!

I've been waiting (not so patiently) for their latest album since they announced via twitter last year that they were going to be recording this album with Jason Isbell producing said album. Then they launched their (never updated) Kickstarted project. And then they would tour and play songs off of said upcoming album. It honestly felt like I was never going to actually see the fruition of their time spent in the studio. I was also beginning to think that I had hyped up this album too much in my own head.

Then, something magical happened. I got the link to download the album yesterday. Even more magical than that? I lives up to everything I hoped and dreamed and knew it would be. And for that, I just want to say Thank you, boys, for not letting me down.

Since the first time I saw them four years ago, I fell in love with them and have been a very dedicated fan very since. Like all things, there have been changes not only in the band, but in their sound. As they've grown, they have created something solidly their own. Not exactly country, not exactly rock, not exactly alternative; American Aquarium embodies all of this and more. BJ is the same gifted lyricist that I fell in love with. Maybe he doesn't write quite as many songs about whores that will break your heart, but he still knows how to create not only a song, but an entire album that can embody everything you're feeling. Good or bad, happy or sad, Burn. Flicker. Die. is going to become your go-to album for all emotion.

I have been listening to Burn. Flicker. Die. solidly for the past two days and I regret nothing. Now all that's left is to hope hey ship the record to the right house since I move this weekend...

American Aquarium - Katherine Belle

This is my first video that I've used Adobe Premiere Pro with, but I think it actually turned out pretty decent. All of the footage is from when American Aquarium performed at LaGrange  a few months back. Enjoy!

"Redheads and Adderall" - American Aquarium

Last night, Austin and I went to La Grange to see American Aquarium. I love these guys and they never disappoint. This is one of their new songs, a song which they say they will be recording when they go into the studio in January.

"Anne Marie" by American Aquarium

This is one of the most beautiful songs ever. I originally thought American Aquarium would be too country for my personal taste, but they're amazing. Enjoy.
